Why are skylines so popular

It's now simply referred to as the Nissan GT-R. This platform is far different from the ones that came previously. For starters, it looks completely different and has ditched the boxier frame in favor of a more rounded, modern look. The performance of the R35 is perhaps the biggest change. These specs are a far cry from the models that came before. Possibly the most famous and best example of the Skyline is the R One of the reasons this car was so popular was because it just seemed so far ahead of its time and still is so sought after today.

It's no surprise the car is still so valuable and still in such high demand even in Part of the reason this car was so ahead of its time was the handling and the RB26 spoken about earlier. The looks still hold up so well also and even back in the late 90s when the R34 was first introduced, it just seemed like it would be a classic for years to come.

The interior may not be quite up to modern standards, but it can be forgiven slightly on that front. It shouldn't really come as any surprise that Skylines have a long history in racing. Part of the reason the road cars are so good to drive is because of the inclusion of these Skylines in racing events.

The Skyline GT-R has been competing in touring car events since the 60s and still competes in them today. It was a recipe that enticed a generation of car enthusiasts. In Nissan released the R33 Skyline. More aggressive styling, more power and a higher potential output once tuned , coupled with a defined legacy, four-wheel-drive as standard, and a promised NISMO iteration coming in , made for a successful package.

Like its predecessors, the R33 was not available in the United States — despite how certain films painted a picture of a thriving underground tuner scene. It was competing against the likes of the Toyota Supra A80 — another Fast and Furious headliner — which, as Anagnostopoulos notes, was in fact sold in the United States. This has, in turn, seen demand and prices rise inexplicably. The now costly R34 was introduced in and is arguably the most recognized model thanks to its silver screen and video game appearances, and that it is the final car to carry the full Skyline GT-R moniker.

This allows collectors to own cars that were historically or technologically significant — the R34 being both — and means they can only drive it for 2, miles a year, presumably to and from shows. Of course, many have found loopholes to rewire the mileage systems, drive in secrecy, or even import parts of the Skyline over to the U. However, as of , the R34 will be legal to drive in the United States without any special permission.

As we have seen with previous models such as the R32, bringing a Skyline into the U. I am a firm believer that once the R34 lineup becomes 25 years old we will see values unlike ever before throughout the entire Skyline range. Nissan ceased production of the car in , and the Skyline never returned. For those looking to buy a Skyline in the U. Some of these cars are at least 25 years old, which as Anagnostopoulos explains is a good thing for those looking to fix-up their newly acquired gem.

The main points to inspect for rust on the Skylines are strut towers, trunk floor, window surrounds, trunk drip rails, and most importantly the jack points under the car. Then comes the R35 generation though the heaviest GT-R out there and now powered by a twin turbocharged V6 instead of the straight-six.

The acceleration in the R35 is astonishing, achieving a time in 3. Today, it is not surprising to see GT-Rs making over horsepower and people recording their quarter mile and beating Lamborghini, Ferrari and even Bugatti onto YouTube. Now if you see one of these on the streets, prepare to bring your phone out. There are a lot of special editions of the GT-R. I won't list all the specifications of all GT-Rs, but I can list some of the really special ones. Firstly, we got the R, a horsepower twin turbocharged custom made RB engine that can do at around 4 seconds and has a top speed of mph.

Then there is the Z-Tune which are just base Skyline GT-R V-Spec that has been tuned by Nismo themselves and makes horsepower and can achieve a top speed of mph. The GT-R50 makes horsepower using the turbochargers from their GT3 race car and it also has a heavy duty crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods, a modified intake system and a recalibrated gearbox and a reinforced differential.

The body is also designed by Italdesign and only 50 of these limited edition will be made. If you ignore the GT-R special editions, then the R34 GT-R is still special, around 11, of those GT-R are made and the majority of them are the V-Spec, while there are around 43, R32 GT-Rs and around 16, R33 GT-Rs are made, so if you see these on the street, don't scream, especially if you see either the R32, R33 or R34 on the streets of the States and now you can import the R32 or R33 into the states since those are 25 years or older, but the R34 isn't 25 years old, so you can't import the R34 yet, except if you do the "show and display" legal.

Ok, I will admit some of the fan base might be a little toxic and stubborn as they think that the GT-R and other Japanese legends are the only cars in the world, but some actually appreciate this car and others, so they deserve some respect to appreciate all types of car. Nissan themselves actually are pleased with the fan base who love this car and actually host a special 50th anniversary for the fans where you get to meet other GT-R lovers and might even post your picture of GT-R to their social media if you are lucky enough.
